How does Animal Migration Work in Africa?
I believe that everyone may have heard of the great migration
in Africa. Moreover, some of us might be curious and
wonder how an enormous number of animals to have a
migration simultaneously once a year. There are 3 major
species of animal in this great migration, which include
wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes. Besides, under a
long-term drought, with a limited food and natural
resource, the living environment is extremely severe in
Africa. Moreover, on their life-threatening journey, they
just have two things in their minds, that are food and water.
Nevertheless, here I want to introduce 3 stages that are included in the process of the migration for animal in Africa, questing for the food, running away from the predators, and returning back to their original habitats eventually.
In the first stage, which is for the animals to quest for
the food, which means to search for the food. Under the
scorching hot weather of Africa, there is a frequent drought
occurring from time to time in May, which resulted in the
depletion of green pastures in Africa. Consequently,
because of the insufficiency of the food and water, herds of
animals set out on a journey in order to look for food and
water in some places that are so far away from their homes.
They make a migration from Tanzania to Kenya once a year
in June. Moreover, the migration allows a species to be prosperous, by leaving an area when there isn't enough food there to support the population. As a result, though the journey for animals to make a migration are astonishing also life threatening, these periodic movements can make them has a better chance to find enough food and to sustain their lives instead. Therefore, it is necessary for the animal to search for food in the arid season.
In the second stage of the animal migration, which is
for the animals to run away from the predators. During
the process of the animal migration journey, it is hard for
them to ensure and to guarantee their safety. Along the
journey, they need to cross over the rapid river that has
couples of crocodiles who are waiting for their dinners'
coming. Besides, when the wildebeests, zebras, and
antelopes are passing through the African Savannah,
there are always a numerous number of predators
waiting for the opportunity to hunt them. For this reason,
they need to keep running and fleeing so that they can survive form the predators’ hunting.
As for the third also the last stage in the animal
migration in Africa, which is for the animals to return
back to their original habitats. After the seeking of
food, water, and the merciless fleeing that is running
away from the predators, which has lasted for 2~3
months, those animals can finally return back to their
original dwelling. Yet, the risks around them will not
vanish with the time passing by. All along the road
when the animals are coming back from Kenya to Tanzania,
they still have the problems, which are the shortage of water and food also and the threats from the predators. After this exhausting and striking journey has been done, the animals can return back to their homes eventually.
The animals’ migration in Africa seems to be a short journey which lasted for only 2~3 months. However, it is a big thing for the animals that dwell in Africa. In order to search for food and water, they have to experience this disaster one year after another, and it will never come to an end. Most importantly, they need to pay their full attention during the migration in order to survive from this severe environment. Last but not least, from the 3 stages mentioned above: searching for the foods, running away from the predators, and returning back to their original places, we can easily know that how does the African migration work per year.
